The Gentle Warrior

Sometimes he sees with eyes of an eagle
Sometimes with the eyes of a child
Sometimes he runs with the wolves at night
Enduring every mile.

Pained by what he sees around him
Watching his brothers fall
Sometimes the nights seem endless
As he heeds the Warriors' call.

The cries of all his people
Surround him night and day
The beauty of his people cry out
and he hears the Great Spirit say,

"I came to give you life and peace
I gave you the beauty of this land
Today you fight but not alone
For today you become a man."

"Just as it was with your forefathers
Of the ancient ones before you
Who greeted me as the morning broke
As only warriors do."

"I gave you crops to feed you
In the bounty of this land
Today you become a true warrior
I walk with you hand in hand."

"Your feeble arrow is a mighty thing
Your cries become my own
For here you've built in beauty
For here my seed was sown."

"Take your bow and arrow
Ride your horse into the wind
Cry with the voice of the Warrior
Forget the peace of men."

"Today you shield your families
Generations of whom I know
One day they shall awaken
One day your seed shall sow."

"A great voice not your own
Shall cry throughout the land
Go now my Gentle Warrior
For beside you l shall stand."

Now somewhere he sees with an eagles' eye
Watching with the eyes of a child
Forever running with the wolves at night
He slowly turns and smiles.

A war cry arises in the nations
For the forgotten ones of old
And the Gentle Warrior now walks in peace
For today his story was told.

~Poem  by Irishgrrl~
Copyrighted - April 2000

Sometimes I write poems that come from a place within me I cannot explain -
yet I know they may speak to hearts of people that I may never meet.
The above poem is one of 'those'.
If this poem has spoken to you - please email me.  I'd love to hear from you.

This poem is dedicated to the Native Americans all across America; to
once again, let you know - your cries have been heard.  I feel the Great
Spirit would have you to know to walk in peace and know the past now 'speaks'.
