The Swymbridge, Devon, England area is the origin of the Yeo line, and if you search the LDS (Later Day Saints) data base, you will see hundreds of Yeo records. Swymbridge is the epicenter of Yeo lineage and the name "Yeo" one of the oldest names, in contrast with the name Scott, which we now think fairly common but was really scarce in England before the mid 1700's, and then the few families centered around Somerset.
The name Yeo comes from the French "eau" for water, and literally means "by the river." The name stands up to its meaning, Yeo lineage traveled all over the world, esp. to Australia. I communicated with a Yeo researcher with common lineage, that said the Yeo line (Henry) that came to Canada, was considered a lost line, and she very pleased to hear about our Yeo connections. The Yeo line that Henry came from went to Australia, and the U.S.A. I have been in contact with a Richard Yeo who lives in California. He is descended from the same line except from the brother. Many in Henry's family went to Australia with their cattle, with the hope of more land and a chance to spread out even more. They were cattle breeders, butchers and also raised sheep, gathering the wool, as you can see in the one photo on page three.
Henry
and Elizabeth Yeo
emigrated to Ontario between 1871 and 1881. Jane
Aurther Yeo, Thirza's sister, married Aaron Stephens, and could have come
much earlier than Henry and Elizabeth as there is a record of the birth of a son
in Muskoka in 1870.
They had two
children before they came to Canada, Mabel, who married a Ginsberg and Ernest
Henry, who has a grandson Ernie A. Yeo in Australia.
THIRZA ANN YEO,
wife of William Scott was born in 1850 in Swimbridge, Devon, England. So far, I
have not been able to find her, her parents or William's record of entry into
Canada, although there are two possibles for William. You can read
all about their marriage and her life with William Scott in "William's Story."
